Zindagi Na Milege Dobara is Zoya Akhtar’s second directorial venture. Her debut , ‘Luck By Chance’ won critical acclaim and was a major box office hit. This film boasts of an impressive star cast consisting of Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol as the male leads while Kalki Koechlin ( of DEV D. fame ) and Katrina Kaif make up the female portion of the cast. The music has been scored by Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy. Incidentally, they provided the music for Zoya’s first film Luck by Chance , and as we all remember that film had a few chart toppers. So it’ll be interesting to see what kind of music the trio has churned out for this flick.

1. Dil Dhadakne Do
Singers: Shankar Mahadevan , Suraj Jagan, Joi Barua
The first song of this album has a laid back feel to it. It sounds like the perfect song to play while on a road trip, probably in keeping with the theme of the film. However, on my own, this would probably not rack up the numbers on my play count but a promissing start to the album nonetheless
2. Ik Junoon (Paint It Red)
Singers : Shankar Mahadevan, Vishal Dadlani, Ehsaan Noorani, Alyssa Mendonsa, Gulraj Singh
This song sees one half of popular music director duo Vishal-Sekhar , Vishal Dadlani adding his signature gruffyness to the number. He’s able to add sufficient energy to the song which it would have otherwise lacked. Definitely one to get the feet tapping but honestly ,I found the repetitive line “Oo aaah Paint it red” a little annoying but overlooking this, you have yourself a decent song. However, people who don’t like their lyrics running in a continuous loop had best stay away from this one.
3. Khaabon Ke Parinday
Singers : Mohit Chauhan, Alyssa Mendonsa
There’s something about Alyssa Mendonsa’s voice that I find very calming and sleep-inducing. Whether that’s a good thing or not , is for you to decide ! It’s only after more than half the song is over that you hear Mohit Chauhan enter with his usual nasal tone, for a couple of lines and he’s gone which leaves me wondering why he’s been listed as one of the singers of this song. The song as such doesn’t offer you much to come back for or remember it for, which seems to be much along the lines of the 1st two songs unfortunately.
Singers: Farhan Akhtar, Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Maria Del Mar Fernandez
The first thing anyone would notice about this song is that all the 3 male leads have lent their voices for it! Does that fact do something special for this song?
The song has a strong Spanish influence (Surprise Surprise , given the name) with the Spanish Guitar providing a sound quite different from what we’re used to hearing in usual Bollywood songs. Maria Del Mar Fernandez sings in Spanish so those lyrics are not exactly understandable by people who are not well versed in the language and even the Hindi lyrics have a slight Spanish twist to the pronunciation. Yes you can quite easily distinguish each of the actor’s voices but coming back to my initial question, the answer is , not really. The song is alright. Nothing special as such.
5. Der Legi Lekin
Singer : Shankar Mahadevan
This song is 6 minutes long and is rather slow so you do the math on how long it actually runs. I’m a major Shankar fan, so yes I do like this song for the lyrics and his singing even thought it’s pretty run off the mill. This is one to close your eyes, sit back, relax and listen to. Towards the ending, the background music makes a crescendo and the singer is able to glide it in for a smooth landing.
6. Sooraj Baahon Mein
Singers : Loy Mendonsa, Dominique Cerejo, Clinton Cerejo
The music on this number has metallic feel to it at the start. The singers are able to hit an impressive range of pitches, given that they’re all men and the contrast works well. The song is a tad bit on the slow side and can get slightly repetitive in terms of lyrics. I wasn’t too impressed by the song on it’s own.
7. Toh Zinda Ho Tum
Singer : Farhan Akhtar
This is the only song in the album where Farhan gets to flex his vocal chords on his own. It starts out with him talking , set to guitar strings being plucked. *Cue more music in the background*. Aaaannnd, that’s about it in this song. Yes, I lied when I said he sings and technically, when I called this a song.
Final Verdict : With music directors like Shankar Ehsaan and Loy, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara definitely did not live up to my expectations. There wasn’t a single song in the album that really blew my mind or even impressed me for that matter. I wasn’t able to actually distinguish one song from the next , after taking off my headphones, except perhaps Senorita. Right now , the others are just one big mush in my head. Perhaps the picturization of the songs will help improve the overall presentation . We’ll have to wait for the movie to find out , but until then, this album is a big let down.
