Maestro AR Rahman’s KM Music Conservatory in Chennai  is well known for producing talented playback singers. One of them is Sharanya Srinivas, daughter of the well known playback singer Srinivas. Sharanya performed her first song, at an age of 10, for maestro AR Rahman  in the song “Alangatti Mazhai” from Thenali. Ever since, there’s no looking back.

We got a chance to interview the very talented Sharanya Srinivas. Here are the excerpts:

Carnatic music is known to be very disciplined and structured. How did growing up with it affect your musical tastes?

Yes! That is true. It did influence my taste at a very tender age, as I used to keep going to a lot of concerts during the December season. As a result, I used to be in awe of all the artists and used to thoroughly enjoy the whole experience. And honestly as a rasika, growing up with a plethora of various ragas and artists has personally enriched my musical tastes. There is just so much to learn, and every day as an artist, you keep discovering new things. Hence, I would say, having a background in Carnatic training has only helped me love the art more and appreciate every kind of music since childhood!

You and your father are both renowned for Carnatic songs. How is your singing style different from that of your father’s?

Very! I have so much of respect for my dad’s art and creativity. He has never been formally trained in music, and has solely achieved a great deal with incredible zest and passion. Therefore, I would say I have a lot to learn from his really laid back style of singing. He sings with this unabashed abandon, free of all worries 🙂 I would like to be less rigid and more creative like him!

How did your first song happen? How was the experience?

My very first song was for the movie Konjam Koffee Konjam Kaadhal’, composed by a very talented and good friend of mine, Phani Kalyan. We had studied together at the KM Music Conservatory when one day, he randomly called me after ages to ask for demo songs of mine. After I’d mailed him, he told me that he wanted to try my voice out for a song for the movie. Since he’s always been a good friend, the experience was a very chilled out and fun-filled one without any nervousness.

How is the experience working with/meeting AR Rahman?

Surreal is the word! I’ve literally grown up listening to his music and being the biggest fan ever! So, you can imagine how it must’ve been to meet someone I think is God! The first thing you notice about Rahman sir is how calm and composed he is. And you will see the magic unfold with your own eyes while singing for him when he is playing the piano or recording. I still get goosebumps thinking about working with Rahman sir. I consider myself truly blessed to have seen all the magic unfold in the presence of the genius!

What is your take on music reality shows? Do you watch any?

Yes I do. I personally believe it is the best platform for many talented individuals to showcase their skills. It is so good to see all the winners and runners up of reality shows to make it big in the playback world too.

What are your hobbies? What do love the most, other than music?

Watching movies! Haha. Am a big movies buff. All you need to do is give me a hard disk full of movies and I will be the happiest person 🙂

How is your typical day? You must be travelling to different places, be it recording or live shows. How do you manage to spend time at home?

By sharing stories with my sister and mother. Whenever I am home, I’m either laughing away with them or like I said previously, watching a movie!

Do you plan on any private albums in the near future? What can we expect from you in the future?

I plan to keep everything only for the short run. I would definitely release a private album comprising of old Tamil poetry. There is also a plan to release a music video in the near future.
