1. Oke Kaavyam
Singers : S.P.Balasubramaniam
The much hyped ‘SPB-Harris’ number ! SPB has sung some fantastic songs for Harris(Maayeera, Yamma Yamma, Othai Viral).Does this song has all the qualities to be remembered in the future ? We doubt so. There is nothing exceptional in this song – be it the tune, lyrics or arrangements. Good picturization & repeated listening is required to make this song stand out amongst the rest.
2. Nuvva Nuvva
Singers : Vijay Prakash,Sowmya Mahadevan
Typical Harris song ! “Nuvva Nuvva” is a very contemporary number with trance backgrounds. Vijay Prakash leads the song from the front with his vocals easily hitting high notes. The song is racy & has signature Harris Jayaraj written all over it. One could notice that the background groove is almost continuous & the composer scores off in the second interlude where there is one superb piece of extended usage of pan flute. Gives you a ‘heard before’ feel but still, catchy!
3. Tholi Merupa
Singers : Karthik,Chinmayi
Straight out of ‘Unnale Unnale’ ! ‘Tholi Merupa’ is a soft, solo number rendered by Karthik. The emphasis is on guitars & rhythm pads without any loud, jarring instruments. But the catchiness eludes the tune. The ‘heard before’ feel haunts the whole track & leaves us unimpressed.
Singers : Hariharan,Sriram,Megha
Absolutely stunning arrangements! ‘Raakkaasi’ is by far the most impressive song of the album. Hariharan completely owns the song & the scale shifts in the song are more than ordinary. This song has a period/tribal feel to it & a lot of it is attributed to the rendition. The chorus portions are very haunting too. The added sound effects deserve a mention too. Very different!
Singers : Gopal Rao,Shakthisree Gopalan,Sathyan
One of the better tracks of the album ! ‘Chandravanka’ is enhanced only by the lyrics & the rendition. The tune falls flat on most occasions & misses the usual ‘Harris’ touch. The fillers, interludes & preludes have been well worked out & the composer delivers an ear soothing, pleasant folksy duet. The tune’s lack of catchiness is compensated by the other fantastic aspects in this number.
Singers : Vijay Prakash,Karthik
Yet another Selvaraghavan type track ! This number by all means reminds us of ‘Kaadhal Yen Kaadhal’, ’Voda Voda’, ’Why This Kolaveri’ & other such ‘soup’ songs. Vijay Prakash & Karthik are in their usual self in the vocal department singing their way with ease & making the song work single-handedly. The entire track has only minimal instrument usage. A trademark Selvaraghavan song!
7. Varna Theme
At first instance itself, one could sense the grandeur
of the track. This theme music is sure to deliver goosebumps to the listeners & elevate the movie to much higher scale. The theme music is layered with horns, period drums, extended choir section etc. Even though it has some resemblance to the ‘Braveheart’ pieces, this theme music is definitely a winner. The closing segment of the track is really impressive. Thumbs up!
Picks of the album: Raakkaasi, Paalalle, Nuvva Nuvva
Album Verdict: Could have been a lot better !
