Ustad Sultan Khan, the noted Sarangi player passed away today. The singer, best known for his contribution as a Sarangi player for Hindustani classical music was the recipient of India’s third highest civilian honor- Padma Bhushan, in 2010. Ustad’s work – “Piya Basanti Re” is one of the few immortal songs that will remains in our hearts forever.
Ustad Sultan Khan was one of the members of the Indian fusion group “Table Beat Science” with other legends like Zakir Hussain and Bill Laswell. Ustad Sultan Khan was also the recipient of prestigious musical awards including Sangeet Natya Academy Award, also known as the President’s Award, Gold Medalist Award of Maharashtra and the American Academy of Artists Award in 1998. The legend sang “Albela Sajan Aayo Re” along with Shankar Mahadevan in the Hindi film – “ Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam”. One of his most noted works include the album – “Piya Basanti Re” in 2000 which was a runaway success and was certified Gold.
Following the recent demise of legends Jagjit Singh and Bhupen Hazarika, Ustad Sultan Khan’s death is a huge void for Indian Music. His work will remain immortal.
