The year 2011 has probably not been the best year for the music industry. Legends like Srinivas Khale , Jagjit Singh, Bhupen Hazarika , Ustad Sultan Khan will be missed. However, their contribution to music are eternal and everlasting . On the upside, 2011 has produced some scintillating and experimental albums like Rockstar, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and viral hits like “Why this Kolaveri Di” , which received unprecedented viewership.

2011 has been quite different from 2010 for the music industry. While 2010 has seen plenty of “Indian” melody-oriented tracks , this year has been the year of the new gen music – Rock music has been highly influential, international artistes have been preferred (Not to forget Akon-Chamak Challo and Dildaara – Stand by me). In retrospect 2011 has been a break-away year for bollywood as far as Music is concerned. It is heartening to see composers competing with each other to innovate and not being stereotype. In that sense, 2011 has been a very successful year for Bollywood music industry.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Tanu Weds Manu

Delhi Belly

1. Rockstar

Music Director : A.R. Rahman

Rockstar is undoubtedly the album of the year. Comprising of a whopping 14 tracks, the album is a testimony to the genius of A.R.Rahman. The ace composer has given us some unforgettable songs like 'Sadda Haq', 'Nadaan Parindey', 'Kun Faaya Kun' to name a few. The songs of 'Rockstar' will remain in the hearts of music lovers for a long time. After quite a long gap, Rahman weaves his magic and how.

2. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara

Music Director : Shankar – Ehsaan – Loy

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara was one phenomenal album by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. At first glance, you might not find the tracks as appealing as Kal Ho Naa Ho but after seeing the movie, one must say the tracks blend the situations in the movie extremely well. Sooraj Ki Baahon Mein, Dil Dhadakane and Ik Junoon were the happy-go-lucky songs blending into the movie amazingly well. Senorita was the #1 track in the album. Slow melody-oriented songs like Khaabon Ke Parinday seemed to have an eternal ecstasy. Shankar was at his best in the album in Der Legi Lekin. Finally, Toh Zinda Ho Tum had the best lyrics of the movie and the year as well.

3. Bodyguard

Music Director : Himesh Reshammiya, Pritam and Sandeep Shirodkar

Himesh Reshammiya and Salman Khan finally work together once again ! Teri Meri and I Love You were the best songs of the album. Overall, the music of bodyguard is limited but we are impressed with what they have offered. This could serve as a good platform for Himesh Reshammiya to make his return to Bollywood music. Though experimental in certain places, it offers a good mix of song. What would’ve really been appreciated on the disc would’ve been fewer remixes and more actual tracks.

4. Tanu Weds Manu

Music Director : Krsna

Tanu Weds Manu is probably one of those albums which you might have missed ! It offers a good range of tracks. Sadi Gali and Yun Hi were awesome compositions by Krsna. Roop Kumar Rathod was perfect once again for Piya. The other tracks were good as well making Tanu Weds Manu a brilliant album.

5. Delhi Belly

Music Director : Ram Sampath

The experimental soundtrack of Delhi Belly struck a chord with the youth and was pretty impressive. This soundtrack scored on energy and songs like 'Bhaag DK Bose' scorched the charts and were a rage.

6. Agneepath

Music Director : Ajay – Atul

Agneepath was the biggest album of the year for well known Marathi music directors Ajay-Atul. While Chikni Chameli did not create the same spur as Komadi Palali, other tracks are worth a listen. We expect more from Ajay-Atul, considering the fact that they revolutionized the Marathi music industry ! Short impressive and doesn’t get cliché or boring anywhere! No second thoughts, surely not disappointing compared to the expectations , go ahead and buy the album and enjoy a mix and intensive revenge seeking songs and emotional slow songs.
