Title theme

Madras Cafe is a political thriller based on the incidents which took place in Sri Lanka during the time of Indian intervention in the Sri Lankan civil war and assassination of former Indian prime minister Rajiv Gandhi.

1. Sun le re (Original)

Singer : Papon

Lyrics : Ali Hayat

Papon provokes you to hear this song with his deeply rooted voice, shenaai and guitars calling out to god, asking for help. Though the track is slow and at times make the listener bored , but it grows on you and will suit better after listening a few times back to back in a calm atmosphere.

2. Ajnabi

Singer : Zebunisaa Bangash

Lyrics : Zebunisaa Bangash

A smooth feather strumming of the guitar with the voice of Zeb (Coke studio , Pakistan – Zeb and Haniya, remember them?) takes you for a humming in this nice romantic song. There are certain portions which seems to be imperfect in terms of rendition , but that’s what adds charm to the song.

3. Khud Se

Singer : Papon

Lyrics : Manoj Tapadia

This track too, is not kept too high on instruments with just a piano, cymbals and solo violin joining set of patriotic lines, if not hard , they atleast make you go for the word “Freedom”. The repetition of ‘Khud se’ grow a little too much ,but the song is good. Papon shoulders the entire responsibility of setting the momentum and pace.

4. Sun le re (Reprise)

Singer : Papon

Lyrics : Ali hayat

Similar to the first song , but is a rock version involving Papon with his soulful voice. This even creates a nice feel with extended pieces of electric guitar, harmonies compared to the earlier one and relieves out in a slow manner.

5. Entry to Jaafna

Layers of cellos , strings cross-fading with shehnaai and silent pauses make up this small instrumental look kinda good.

6. Madras Cafe Theme

This is the main theme among all other soundtracks in the album put up together to represent the film with some sitar, flamenco guitar strains, violins and traditional damooras in a somewhat effective manner.

7. Conspiracy

Singer : Monali Thakur

This song brings the feel of living with pain in danger and captivates with some abrupt yet pulsating synths, pitch-throated voices for a few moments. This seems to be mindless walk and flat in the name of creating situational music.

8. Title theme

This is just another instrumental repeat of the main theme music with tender solo violins , cellos, wind instruments creating a wind of swirls. But this soundtrack seems to be better with the screeching tones and beats.

Album Verdict:

One is to be tad surprised at the songs rendered by Shantanu Moitra. No commercial tracks seen at any point. This is one fine compilation of sounds

and silences captured for a spy thriller. Papon has got hold of the maximum opportunity to sing nearly every song and excelled in a brilliant way. Even if the music for Madras Cafe was set experimental , Music director Shantanu Moitra could have gone with much more variety in instrument usage and treatment of songs.
