1. Explain the inspiration behind your latest EP “A Summer to Remember”.

My EP “A Summer to Remember” was inspired by experiencing life in my early 20’s. Musically I was inspired by numerous bands and artists, such as Simple Plan, McFLY, We the Kings and Ryan Cabrera. I really wanted to make a record that’s current and yet something that people will listen to for years to come, so I made sure that I put my heart and soul into this EP.

  1. What is your favorite song on the EP and why?

This is tough because I love all of them and they’re all very close to me. If I really had to choose one, I’d say ‘If I Could I Would’ which is the first song that I wrote for the EP. The process of writing and recording took longer than other songs and I think the hard work has definitely paid off as the song debuted and peaked at No.41 on the iTunes Top 100 Charts in Malaysia.

  1. We love your music video, who came up with the concept for it?

Thank you very much! I worked with this super talented music video director, Embryo, and we came up with the concept together. I also got my close friends to be part of the music video, which made the whole process so much fun.

  1. What do you hope your fans take away from your music.

Well I hope my fans will be able relate to the story of my music and go ‘Hey, I’ve been there!’. If I can do that, then I’ve done my job as an songwriter and artist.

  1. What was the first album you ever bought?

I don’t think I can even remember that but I believe it was Westlife’s ‘Coast to Coast’. I was a huge fan of 90’s pop and still am!

  1. What is your fondest musical memory?

I was invited by the High Winds Ensemble in Malaysia to sing “My Way” by Frank Sinatra for the Georgetown festival. It was nerve racking because I did not get a chance to rehearse with them due to our busy schedules before performing in front of thousands of people, but luckily everything went well!

  1. Which famous musicians have you learned from?

There are so many musicians or bands that inspired me as musician since young. I really respect Justin Timberlake, he has come a long way in his career from being in The Mickey Mouse Club to a Pop superstar and Hollywood actor. I admire how he wowed everyone with his third album “The 20/20 Experience” after 7 years of a break from music. It just shows that he’s all about doing it right and sometimes you just can’t rush perfection.

  1. As a child you were a participant on a Malaysian version of Star Search, did that help to prepare you for your future career.

Absolutely! Meeting a lot of people in the entertainment industry at such a young age has really opened a lot of doors for me. I remember seeing myself on the TV for the first time and telling myself that I want to keep doing music for the rest of my life.

  1. If you could choose one person to co-write a track with you, who would it be and why?

Definitely Martin Johnson of Boys Like Girls. Besides being the front man of Boys Like Girls, Martin is also super active and doing extremely well in the songwriting world. He has written many hit songs such as “Here’s To Never Growing Up” by Avril Lavigne and “Human” by Christina Perri.

    10. What can we expect next from Tan?

I’m constantly staying creative and writing new material so people should expect a new EP or full-length album sometime next year. I’m also writing music for an upcoming Facebook game called “Dotx War” which is super exciting as it’s a whole new experience for me.
