We managed to get an interview with Gerard Singh. Here are the excerpts of the interview:
Why do you think “Crazy” has really caught on with fans?
Thank you very much. To be honest, I really have no idea why the track has caught on, I’m just glad that it did. If I have to say anything about it, it would have to be that the lyrics mean a lot to me and maybe the people who have listened to the song and like it, can actually relate to that.
Can you tell us about what was going on around the time you wrote the track?
When I was writing that song, I was thinking about all the times I was down and was hoping for support from the people closest to me but not getting it. Hence the line, ‘DON’T TURN YOUR BACK ON ME, NOW THAT I NEED YOU’ … everything else is pretty much metaphor and simile built around that line.
How did you get into music as a child?
Well we always had music at home in some form or other and my late dad played some guitar and sang, my mom sang too. Naturally I was given a guitar when I was about 11 and eventually started learning how to play. I would have to say though, the biggest influence was actually CHURCH! That’s where I met other people from the choir who were also interested in music, so you might say that they added fuel to the fire.
Who are your greatest musical influences?
Everything I listen to that I like, influences me one way or another! I have always had a penchant for good lyrics and genres of music like blues, jazz, rock n’ roll and progressive rock. I absolutely love Queen, Robben Ford, Al Stewart, Jethro Tull, Steely Dan, CSN, James Taylor, Rush, Yes, AC/DC, Megadeth, Porcupine Tree, The Beatles … etc. The list goes on and on and it is getting bigger because I am constantly finding lots of new music now that I like. Having said all that, I would still have to say that the people around me (not just the musicians) are my greatest influences and inspire me the most!
What is next for Gerard? Will you be releasing a new single soon?
Well we (Lakefront Records & I) are in the midst of completing the album but have yet to decide whether it will be released as an EP, or if we should record more songs and release it as an LP. Yes, we are considering the release of another single and right now we are sort of splitting hairs on which one it should be.
Will you be touring soon?
I really do hope to be touring very soon because nothing beats performing to an audience who is there to listen to you do your thing. A lot of it would depend on how well the single “CRAZY” does, so if you guys really want to see me on tour, please do share the song “CRAZY” with as many people as you possibly can.
What is your favorite song of the moment and why?
This question actually made me smile a lot because just the other day I decided to play my old Al Stewart cd. I have been listening to TIME PASSAGES over and over again in my car. That song brings back a lot of memories for me and I really do hope that one day my music can do the same for someone else.
