Here’s To Never Growing Up by Avril Lavigne, the lead single from her upcoming fifth studio album is just the kind of song that starts out as annoying and ends up being extremely catchy. It’s bound to have you pumped up and happily singing along or screaming “Wooo!” after random parts of the chorus! It’s the steady stomp-y drum beats, the Radiohead reference, the superficial but catchy hook and in part, I think, because it’s AVRIL.
Released on the 9th of April by Epic Records, this single by the Canadian pop rock singer seems to be wooing the charts already! Lyrically, it’s no ‘Complicated’ which will always be her best song for me… but in terms being radio-friendly and as Avril herself described in one of her radio interviews, “summery”, I think it is a winner! Here’s To Never Growing Up is the kind of song that you can hold hands to and sing along to!
Though initially, I just didn’t get the appeal or the charm… with the pulsating beats and chant-like sing-songy opening… I did eventually find myself reluctantly singing along! It borders on anthemic and has been aptly compared to Ke$ha’s We R Who We R. There’s also a prettiness in the tune that you don’t quite get till the second or third listen!
As a singer, I think Avril sounds at ease, in her element, echoing nonchalance and living-for-the-moment in a way that she never quite aced as much as she does now. It helps that the lyrics video (viewable on YouTube) features clips of her fans from all over the world and it’s said that in the official video, she will be wearing the same outfit as what she wore
in the ‘Complicated’ music video all those years back, making it all the more of a sensational and fun comeback single!
Verdict: Here’s To Never Growing Up is a song you’ll like in spite of yourself !
