 Album Analysis :

1. Boomi Enna Suthudhe

Singers : Anirudh

Lyrics : Dhanush

A second into this song & we can easily guess that the lyrics are written by Dhanush. This one is basically a soft song with hero singing about him much like a positive ‘Voda Voda’. Anirudh does a neat job and he is as good as a professional singer. The lyrics are easy to catch & the listeners can relate them with Siva Karthikeyan. This is ‘tap your feet’ stuff from Anirudh. The arrangements deserve a mention. Bright start!

2. Nijamellam Maranthu Pochu

Singers : Dhanush, Anirudh

Lyrics : Dhanush

This one’s a killer! “Nijamellam Maranthu” starts with off in a peppy fashion with fast beats & a catchy prelude. Dhanush’s voice is auto-tuned(still, sounds catchy). The lyrics are simple & youth-centric. This song has a high repeat value. The English rap portions which come inbetween are extremely addictive. The warp interludes do elevate the song to a new level. ”Paakama Parkadha” segment is going to be sung by thousands of youngsters in the coming days. Must listen!

3. Ethir Neechal

Singers : YoYo Honey Singh, Hip Hop Tamizha Adhi, Anirudh Ravichander

Lyrics : Vaalee

The promo of this song is popular than the movie itself. Lot was said about this song as it features YoYo Honey Singh in his first regional song. The song’s layout appears to be a fusion of Bhangra + Rap, Bhangra + kuthu, Bhangra + Hip-Hop. The best portion of this song is sung by Anirudh & YoYo. Hip-Hop Aadhi joins in the last segment of this song & is less appealing because his singing involves more shouting.  But, Vaalee’s lyrics shine throughout taking up references such as Usain Bolt. This song is poised to be right there at the top. Chartbuster!

4. Local Boys

Singers : Dhanush, Velmurugan

Lyrics : R. S Durai Senthilkumar

This is the much hyped ‘kuthu’ song in which Dhanush is supposed to make a cameo. Dhanush takes in-charge of the vocals along with Velmurugan(Remember Otha Sollala ?). But, the song appears very loud & jarring at parts which makes this one as the weakest of the album. This is definitely not a song for the classes. The beats dominate & the lyrics have become typecast. (Kaadhal En Kaadhal, Why this Kolaveri ?). During the second interlude, there is a beat shift and the song looks better from there. But, this ain’t a kolaveri !

5. Un Paarvayil

Singers : Anirudh, Vivek Siva

Lyrics : R. S Durai Senthilkumar

A very short song.  “Un Paarvayil” is more like the type which will be used as a background score. Anirudh starts off in a breezy fashion with his couple of lines & the song suddenly is dominated by instruments – the flute especially. This number though reminds us of the bgm’s in “3” is soothing to hear. Good one!

6. Velicha Poove Va

Singers : Mohit  Chauhan, Shreya Ghoshal

Lyrics : Vaalee

The best song of the album! The trick lies in keeping things simple & this song does that big time. Vaalee’s lyrics tells us why he is the best around. The vocals are handled by India’s two current popular singers – Mohit Chauhan & Shreya Ghoshal. Mohit repeats his “Po Nee Po” magic & Shreya does her “Ai Raat Dhere Chal” act once again. ”Kaadhal Kaadhal” segment is really magical. The pan flute interlude deserves a mention too.

Anirudh proves again that he is not a one-movie wonder! The songs appear fresh, have extreme youth-appeal. Overall, the packaging of the album is nice – 1 instrumental, 1 duet, 1 kuthu, 1 hip hop, 1 melody, 1 inspiration. Almost all the songs carry the “3” legacy forward but it is inevitable that people would compare this album with “3”. Apart from “Local Boys”, almost all songs have a sense of softness in them. And, Anirudh has raised the bar one more time!

Picks of the album : Velicha Poove Vaa, Un Paarvayil, Nijamellam Maranthu Pochu, Boomi Enna Suthudhe

Album Verdict : Anirudh seals this year ! “Kolaveri” album !
