Album Analysis

1.One Two Three Four

Singers : Vishal Dadlani, Hamsika Iyer & Sricharan Kassturirangan

Lyrics : Amitabh Bhattacharya

The ‘Tamil-Hindi’ cocktail ! Aimed at the masses, this track is intended to be a Hindi track set to the template Tamil tunes. The idea is right & so is the execution. The lead vocals by Vishal & Hamsika(yes, the Chammak Challo team) is catchy to say the least. For people who had already started biting the bullet creating vibes for this song – just understand the fact that such songs do have a long following down south & if the idea is to make a similarly placed song for a Hindi movie, then they have recreated it perfectly fine. The bottomline is, ‘One Two Three Four’ is highly enjoyable & is going to be a mass sensation.

Singers : Chinmayee, Gopi Sunder

Lyrics : Amitabh Bhattacharya

The best song of the album ! Unanimously praised when the promos were released, ’Titli’ is a romantic, melodious duet enriched with tailor-made vocals of Chinmayi & Gopi Sunder. The lyrics are just a tad above the rest – delightfully ruling the show. At no stage, the backing arrangements overtake the vocals thus keeping the entire track pleasant to hear. Award shows – lookout !

3.Tera Rastaa

Singers : Anusha Mani, Amitabh Bhattacharya

Lyrics : Amitabh Bhattacharya

The second best song of the album ! ‘Tera Rastaa’ is a lovely duet simply working on all aspects. The vocals by Anusha & Amitabh simply elevate this song to a different level. The background arrangements are bit pacy to the tune. But still, it works. There was scope for a slower version of this track too. Sadly, didn’t feature in the soundtrack. The portion where they merge Titli with this track is quite interesting.

4. Kashmir Main Tu Kanyakumari

Singers : Sunidhi Chauhan, Neeti Mohan & Arijit Singh

Lyrics : Amitabh Bhattacharya

The slow-poison of the album ! ‘Kashmir Main’ is the peppy, 90’s styled track along the lines of ‘Dhadak Dhadak’. Sunidhi Chauhan(Shiela Ki Jawani, Halkat Jawani), Arijit Singh(Aashiqui 2) & Neeti Mohan(Jiya Re, Naza Laaye) team up & deliver flawless renditions. The background instrumentation is highly rhythm oriented. The tune gives a ‘heard-before ‘ feel but the ensemble assembly of singers make this song work.

5. Ready Steady Po

Singers : Vishal Dadlani, Brodha V, Enkore, Smokey, Natalie DiLucco

Lyrics : Amitabh Bhattacharya

The wackiest song in the album ! First things first – this song looks

like it’ll accompany either a travel scene (or) a fight scene. The mixing done in this song is top-notch. The techno-ish feel is right there throughout the song. Vishal Dadlani carries this song with his vocals. This song would appeal easily to youngsters & can be easily heard in clubs, DJ’s in the forthcoming days. Not an instant pick but still good.

6. Chennai Express (Title Track)

Singers : S. P. Balasubrahmanyam, Jonita Gandhi

Lyrics : Amitabh Bhattacharya

This song would go down in the history books for the very fact that SPB unites with SRK to deliver a title track. The veteran simply rules the show with his effortless singing. The ‘Tere Mere Beech’ boy is still fresh, still energetic & simply amazes. His Hindi diction sounds a little forced but is a negligible thing. The initial rap portions are funny(if you know Tamil) & the arrangements accompany SPB’s vocals very well. The tune works instantly but the song is probably placed during end-credits. It is SPB’s show all the way !

7. Titli (Dubstep)

Singers : Phonenyx, Zoheb Khan

Lyrics : Amitabh Bhattacharya

This is one of its kind in Hindi cinema. Music fanatics might be familiar with the term ‘dubstep’. AR Rahman had tried it in the last Mani Ratnam movie. The legendary Ilayaraja’s son Yuvan Shankar Raja had done it once. ’Titli’ would probably be the first song in which it is employed ‘effectively’. Among the fast paced other songs, choosing Titli to make a dubstep version came as a surprise but it is really cool. The essence of the original melody is maintained & the fusion really works well. Eventhough the chances of finding this track in the movie are minimal, this one’s worth a listen for the experimentation part.

8. Chennai Express (Mashup)

Singers : Vishal-Shekhar, DJ Kiran Kamath

Lyrics : Amitabh Bhattacharya

Vishal-Shekar have been really good with these Mashup kind tracks(Remember Student of the Year ?). This number is just the cut & mix from all the numbers in the soundtrack. Done mainly for the DJ’s & promotional purposes, there is nothing much to analyze here.

‘Titli’ & ‘Tera Rastaa’ are the two pillars of this album – no second thoughts over it. When it comes to other tracks – the Mashup & the Dubstep are done for promotional & experimental purposes respectively. The remaining tracks are extremely high on ‘entertainment’ factor. It is not a Bhaag Milkha Bhaag or a Kai

Po Che.But,the average bollywood fan needs his yearly dose of albums like Chennai Express as well. The music purists might disagree but sorry people, the very purpose of genre of the movie & ost is to have a blast.

The album scores highly on masala, intensity & fun. This has a better ost than any of Rohit Shetty’s previous movies (Singham, Golmaal series, All the Best). Don’t read too much into this album.Just look at this album as another album for a commercial movie, you won’t be disappointed.

Picks of the album : Titli, Tera Rastaa, Chennai Express,Ready Steady

Album Verdict : A perfect ‘paisa-vasool’ album with an even mix of delightful melodies & highly entertaining numbers !
