It’s a Karan Johar movie ! What to expect ? – Big names in the cast,  awesome songs,  high profile cameos & ofcourse – family dramas.  After garnering heavy critical acclaim in his last venture “My Name Is Khan”,  KJo is back & this time with newcomers.  After delivering blockbuster albums in the form of “Kuch Kuch Hota Hai”, ”Kabhie Khushie Kabhi Gham”, ”Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna”, ”My Name Is Khan” & producing musical hits – read “Kal Ho Na Ho”, “Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu”, ”Dostana”, ”Wake Up Sid”, ”I Hate Luv Stories” to name a few, stakes were high for this album. Vishal -Shekhar, riding high after their “Kahaani” & “Shanghai” magic is back again. Are they really back with a bang ? The answer in the platter.

Album Analysis:

1. Vele

Singers : Shekhar Ravijani, Vishal Dadlani

Ever since I got glimpses of this song during the promos, I have been waiting for this song personally. Using the vocals of both the composers – one for Siddharth & one for Varun is a brilliant idea & it has come out in flying colours. Don’t be surprised when u catch this song at any DJ, club coz this one has global appeal written all over it. My personal pick!

2. Radha

Singers : Shreya Ghoshal, Udit Narayan, Vishal-Shekhar

The song starts off with a classical aalap sung by Shreya Ghoshal (Puriya Dhanashree raga i guess). Just when u prepare to listen something like the “Aarti” number from “Delhi 6”, things take a turn & ends up becoming a complete Nach number. Shreya Ghoshal does a commendable job as usual but the surprise package is Udit Narayan who steals the show during the last stanza of the song. ”Radha on the dance floor” phrase is extremely catchy(Though i get shades of “Criminal”, who cares ?). This song is going to be the signature song for Alia Bhatt & she is gonna be known as the “Radha girl” in coming years. Perfect Nach number !

3. Ratta Maar

Singers : Vishal Dadlani, Shefali Alvarez

Ratta Maar appears to be the theme song of the movie. The lead vocals make this song a breezy listen. The chorus portions deserve a special mention. The lyrics depict the exam stress, pressure faced by the students. The guitar work is evident throughout the song. This song is more to score on screen than off screen .

4. Ishq Wala Love

Singers : Shekhar Ravijani, Salim Merchant, Neeti Mohan

The “Ishq Wala” portion in the trailer turned many heads. When u start listening to this number thinking of that portion, u will finally end up getting surprised. What we get is a chirpy, sweet, light romantic number. Salim Merchant also joins the vocals bandwagon & the tabla arrangement is simply superb. This song somehow gives the Kuch Kuch Hota Hai feel where a triangle love story is evident. A silent, pleasant winner !

5. Kukkad

Singers : Shahid Mallya

What is in a Karan Johar album without a Bhangara-Western mix ? We have seen Rock n Roll Soniye, Shavva Shavva & Kukkad follows it up. This song is high on energy & Shahid Mallya pulls this off effortlessly. This song is sure to get high repeat value on music channels.

6. The Disco Song

Singers : Sunidhi Chauhan, Benny Dayal & Nazia Hassan

Finally onto the much expected “The Disco Number”. Just after few seconds of listening, the song adds itself automatically to the list of chartbusters of the year. Nazia Hassan’s Disco Deewane hook is used effectively & this song is set to rock all radio channels, award shows. Sunidhi Chauhan deserves all the applause & Benny Dayal continues where he left us at “Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu”. A worthy successor to It’s the time to disco, Where’s the party tonight. Did I mention the “Ishq Wala Love” portion ?  Just pure bliss !

7. Mashup of The Year

Singers : Vishal Dadlani

Just a customary remix number for the DJ’s & Clubs, the mix containing all the songs from the album. Doesn’t appear to feature in the movie. Nothing much in this number.

“Student of The Year” marks the comeback of Vishal Shekhar back to commercial foray. Since the film has 3 fresh faces, the onus was on Vishal-Shekhar to deliver successful music in order to compliment the movie. Karan Johar continues to enjoy high musical chartbusters whether he is donning the producer’s hat or director’s hat. This album though inconsistent on numbers like Ratta Maar, Mashup Number & a little on Kukkad number, is sure to improve on repeated listening & KJo is known to pack the visuals with his stamp. The other songs such as Radha, Disco Song, Vele are sure to stay.

Picks of the Album : Vele, Disco Song, Ishq Wala Love & ofcourse, Radha

Album Verdict : A commercial, ’play it loud’ album !

Album ★★★★★★★½☆☆
