Album Analysis :
1. Jab Tak Hai Jaan
Singers : Javed Ali,Shakthisree Gopalan
The title track! This song travels the usual ARR route with Shakthisree Gopalan making a very impressive entry. The lyrics just ooze class. Numerous other songs come across our mind given the nostalgic tune this song has. Will this song stand out just the way the Kal Ho Na Ho title track stood out? Well, it really depends. But,musically nothing new in this song.
Singers : Rabbi Shergill
Already popular nationwide thanks to the promos. Challa has massive guitar usage. The song speaks about the search for one’s love. The pitch of the song & the complexities in the arrangement demanded a singer who can sing it with a sufi touch & at the same time who can hit the right notes. Rabbi Shergill has done exactly that. This song seems to be the one during which SRK meets Kat for the first time. We can surely hope to hear ARR’s version of this song in his future concerts. Sure Winner !
Singers : Mohit Chauhan, Shreya Ghoshal
The best song of the album! Shreya Ghoshal just makes singing effortless. She is in top-notch form, literally. This song has more of Yash Chopra’s elements than ARR’s style. Mohit Chauhan renews his successful collaboration with his “Rockstar” guru. The preludes are just mind-blowing. A must hear !
4. Heer Heer
Singers : Harshadeep Kaur
Remember Harshadeep Kaur of “Katiya Karoon” fame ? Yes ! & she is back with ARR in this rather slow number. The “Mirza” thing is well incorporated in the lyrics. The feel of the song coupled with the slow instruments following its path is sure to soothe listener’s ears. There is an element of drama & sadness involved both with the tune & lyrics.
5. Ishq Shava
Singers : Raghav Mathur,Shilpa Rao
Peppy Club Number! This song seems to be the “Tango” number between SRK & Kat. The lyrics sound definitely Gulzar-ish. The background beats are highly impressive. But the vocals do majority of the trick. Raghav Mathur adds the necessary improvisations & Shilpa Rao,who recently mesmerized us with “Aahatein” & “Gustak Dil” adds another feather to this song with her husky voice.
6. Jiya Re
Singers : Neeti Mohan
One of the fast-paced songs of the album. This song is impressive from the word go. This song will be lapped up by youngsters instantly & the background arrangements amaze us. The interludes will definitely leave the listeners awe-struck. This song appears to be the introductory song of Anushka Sharma (Yeah ! The “Jazba” type). The lyrics speak highly of liberty & ensures the song is feeling good. Neeti Mohan has done a neat job.
7. Saans (Reprise)
Singers : Shreya Ghoshal
Shreya – the Rockstar ! This song is just the slow paced attempt of its previous version. This song completely gets owned by Shreya Ghoshal. This is a female solo & hence Mohit Chauhan portions are missing. This version is a tad dramatic or emotional I would rather say compared to the duet version. Truly moving !
8. Ishq Dance
Singers : Instrumental
The Ishq Dance is the instrumental version of the Ishq Saava number. Though not sure if this would find a place in the film, one can easily vouch that this song will be ranked right at the top among the likes of “Liquid Dance”,”Taal Raaga Dance”. A very good listen & dancers have a great one in hand to showcase their moves.
9. The Poem – Jab Tak Hai Jaan
Singers : Shahrukh Khan
What a fitting finale to this album ! Aditya Chopra has really done a fabulous job in writing this poem & who else can recite it better than SRK ? Learning this one’s going to be Yash Chopra’s final movie, the poem offers a fitting tribute in a kinda emotional way. Coming to ARR, just listen to the last few seconds for the electric guitar piece & realize what this man can do. Goosebumps all over !
Yash Chopra, regarded as the “Master of Romance” has always been a taskmaster – getting the best out of everyone. His history speaks for himself (Deewar, Silsila, Trishul, Kabhie Kabhie, Dil To Paagal Hai, Veer Zaara & many more ).Jab Tak Hai Jaan is typical Yash Chopra in every sense that we rarely see ARR’s touches. The fact that Yash Chopra has a highly reputed & successful music sense pays off in this album.
Coming to ARR, the fact that this album follows “Rockstar” will force plenty of people to compare both the albums, which is not fair. Rockstar, being a movie about a singer was completely a different genre. Hence, comparisons aren’t going to work. Also,it is usual for ARR to warm up in an album like this only to unleash more in the next one. This is not his best one but surely would still be ranked on the higher end of his spectrum. This album is somewhere close to “Yuvraaj” where the songs needed some class & sense to be associated with the listeners.
Visually, the picturisation is a guaranteed treat. This generation’s typical ARR fans may not be satisfied with the album. But, this album has got class written all over it. Like every ARR album, this one needs numerous repeated hearings just to get into the flow. Once the listeners reach that level, it’s paradise from then!
Picks of the album : Saans, Challa, Ishq Shava, Jiya Re & The Poem
Album Verdict : A fitting finale for Yash Chopra !
