Chicana Gypsy Project brings together three distinct cultures: Mexican, American, and the Gypsies of Jerez de la Frontera, Spain. The result is a sound that reflects the best of each, blending elements of Flamenco, Jazz and Ranchera to create something truly unique in world music today.

Chicana-Gypsy

The group is the brainchild of Mexican-American Flamenco artist Maria Bermudez, who has spent much of her life immersed in the Gypsy culture of Jerez de la Frontera. Originally a Jazz singer in the United States, Bermudez moved to Jerez to study Flamenco, and went on to become one of the most highly regarded artists to emerge from the region. After several world tours and years as a dancer, she decided to get back to her roots both culturally and musically. The result was Chicana Gypsy Project.

The first track released by the group is titled “Tequila.” You

can hear all of the rich artistic influences in Bermudez’s life in the song, as her sultry vocals are backed by some of the finest Flamenco artists in the world. The combination works amazingly well, sounding natural, cohesive and pure. The musical elements aren’t forced together to create a new sound, they flow together seamlessly, as if meant to be heard together.

“Tequila” is highlighted by a universally catchy chorus: “Tequila para olvidar las penas (Tequila to forget your troubles).” Bermudez says “I think the song resonates with people because it was conceived from nostalgia, blood, sweat and tears of my father working in the fields…..”

One can hear the vast array of emotions in the song through Bermudez’s vocals, the incomparable depth of the Flamenco guitar, and the upbeat tempo of the song. “Tequila” takes the listener on a journey through these emotions, in the end leaving you with a tune in your head that is not easily forgotten.

It’s exciting to hear something completely different in music today. With the recent surge in artist collaborations and mixing of genres, you’d think we’ve heard it all. Not the case- Chicana Gypsy project fills the void for something fresh, exciting and one of a kind.
